Ginger ~ our Gigi

April 22, 1996 ~ January 23, 2010

Christmas Eve 2009

If it should be...

If it should be that I grow frail and weak,
and pain should keep me from my sleep,
then you must do what must be done,
for we know this last battle can't be won.

You will be sad, I understand,
but don't let grief then stay your hand,
for this day, more than the rest,
your love and friendship must stand the test.

We've had so many happy years,
what is to come can hold no fears.
Would you want me to suffer? So,
when the time comes, please let me go.

Take me where my needs they'll tend,
only stay with me until the end,
and hold me firm and speak to me,
until my eyes no longer see.

It is a kindness that you do to me,
although my tail it's last has waved,
from pain and suffering I have been saved.

Do not grieve, it should be you,
who must decide this thing to do.
We've been so close, we two these years,
Don't let your heart hold any tears.

  2. I am so sorry Dana for your loss and know exactly how you are feeling right now. Our 27 year old son said the other day "tell Faldo to come back now" and we still see him in certain areas of the house. It is so unbelievably sad when you have to do the most humane thing for a pet who you loved so much. It just is one of the hardest things. If I could I would come sit with you right now. Just know I am thinking of you and feeling sad that you lost your best friend and such an important part of your life. I am sure Ginger knew it everyday.
    Love Sande XO

  3. Oh Dana! I'm so deeply sorry. She had such a strong & beautiful heart didn't she? I just burst-ed out in tears looking at her sweet genuine eyes. I love the poem you found, it's so true and the words are perfect as if she wrote it just for you. Sending you my warm thoughts always. Bye-Bye little Gigi Girl, I know Dana loved you with all her heart, you will be missed I know!

    Your friend,
    Noel

  5. Mary Helen ~ it seems like yesterday that she was running off to hide your hair bows! She had so much fun with you.

Sande ~ I know just how your son feels. I just want her to come back so much - but for me only ... she is better off now, no longer having to be strong. It is just like losing a child to us.

Noel ~ you are so sweet. She did have the most beautiful heart and the sweetest eyes I have ever seen. We miss her so much.

Finding the poem was comforting to us. It helped us realize we did the right for her. It is still the hardest thing I have ever done.

Thanks for your kind and thoughtful words.

  6. Hi Dana,

She truly was an angel and the poem says everything. You had to be strong when she couldn't be. You are in our prayers and dear Ginger will always be in your hearts.

    much love,
    Heather

  8. Dana, I'm so sorry to read about your loss. I know how hard these last months have been. Ginger was a wonderful dog, clearly, and she had a lovely life, thanks to you.

  10. I follow your blog and am so sad to hear of your pet's passing. It is sooo hard to lose a pet. One of my precious cats - a two year old - was hit by a car last September and I had to put him to sleep. I hope time eases the sadness and brightens all your happy memories you have of Ginger.

  11. Hi Dana,

Gigi was a beautiful girl. My heart is reaching out to yours. There isn't a magic word or wand to heal the heart just time.

Thank you so much for stopping by leaving a wonderful comment about our Kelly. It was extra special knowing you are going through the same thing. Hopefully Gigi and Kelly will bump into each other as they run free in the pasture above.

I haven't been on the computer the last couple of days, but when I get back into the swing of things I will be back to visit and add you to my blog roll.

    Sending you many hugs! xo

  12. Dana,
Oh no I think I lost my comment- so you might bet two.

Gigi was a beautiful girl!! She looked so happy. I wish I had a magic wand or word to make things better, but only time will heal the heart.

Thank you so much for stopping by my blog to leave a comment about Kelly. It really meant a lot knowing you are going through the same thing. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

I hope Gigi and Kelly bump into each other as they run through the green fields above and become best girlfriends.

Once I get back on track I will be back to visit.

    Many hugs my friend.
    xo

  18. This is my first visit to your blog. I'm so very sorry about Ginger. I have 5 dogs and lost another last year. Several years ago, we lost our own "Ginger". It leaves a hole in one's heart, doesn't it? I will keep you in my thoughts.

  19. Dear Dana,

While I was reading Jane Farr's blog I happened to see the picture of your precious little Gigi, and I couldn't resist clicking on it. Now that I've read the post, my heart really goes out to you. Oh how I know how difficult it is to make such a decision. I had to make that decision on Dec. 18th of 2009 for my little Lindsey. I still miss her terribly and feel the sadness, and my other little dog is grieving too. Anyway, I just want you to know that you are in my thoughts and prayers. Linda

  26. Dear Dana,
I have been away for weeks. Now I find this saddest of news about little Gigi. I am so deeply sorry to arrive so late and with such inadequate means to express my sympathy to you both.
